IFM researcher Dr Md Mokhlesur Rahman has discovered a new type of lithium-ion battery anode based on lithium germanium oxide (Li2GeO3).
Mokhles says the material can be used directly, without a carbon coating or a carbon matrix required for many non-graphitic electrode materials.
“The excellent electrochemical performance of Li2GeO3 brings new opportunities in the development of high-performance devices for electrochemical energy storage applications,” he explains.
This discovery highlights the importance of new electrode materials, which can eliminate drawbacks of the conventional carbon-coated anode materials, for lithium-ion batteries. The preliminary findings have been accepted for publication in the international journal Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. (DOI: 10.1002/anie.201609343R1) with co-authors Irin Sultana, Tianyu Yang, Zhiqiang Chen, Neeraj Sharma, Alexey Glushenkov and Ying (Ian) Chen.
