Ruling Awami League candidate Selina Hayat Ivy is optimistic about a free and fair Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) election.
“The atmosphere is festive. I hope the situation will remain this joyous throughout the polls,” she told the media after casting her vote on Thursday morning.
Ivy, Bangladesh’s first woman mayor, is fighting to retain her post. She had won the maiden NCC polls in 2011 defeating Awami League-backed candidate Shamim Osman.
She dubbed reports of a faction of city Awami League withdrawing its support a “rumour” spread before election. “One candidate can’t be liked by all.”
“Law enforcers are active, I hope they will be on the field until tomorrow to prevent any untoward incident,” she added.
This time, 474,931 voters will choose who will lead the city corporation for the next five years.
