Transport workers clashed with the members of law enforcement in Dhaka’s Gabtoli bus terminal area during the second day of the countrywide transport strike on Wednesday. Police fired teargas shells and rubber bullets as the agitators put barricades on roads.
Police arrested 10 people during the clash, one man was injured.
The man named Shah Alam was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Road communications across the country almost collapsed because of the transport strike. All buses and trucks started going off roads in the morning.
At first, the strike started in Khulna division on Sunday in protest against the life sentence of bus driver Jamir Hossain. Jamir was jailed for life by a court for his rash driving that led to a road accident in Manikganj resulting in the deaths of noted film director Tarek Masud, cinematographer Mishuk Munir and three others.
The agitating workers enforced the strike shortly after a truck driver was sentenced to death for killing a woman in a road accident in Savar on the outskirts of the capital.
They burst into protests, demanding the immediate release of the convicted drivers. Without any prior announcement, they began the strike, causing immense sufferings for the passengers. In another verdict, truck driver Mir Hossain was sentenced to death by a court for running over a woman in Savar, causing her death.
