Police foiled an attempt of Pragatishil Chhatra Jote, a platform of leftist student organisations, to stage demonstrations in front of Shahbagh intersection demanding cancellation of Rampal power plant project during National Committee’s hartal in the city, UNB reports.
Witnesses said the activists of Pragatishil Chhatra Jote brought out a procession in front of TSC around 7 am and tried to march towards Shahbagh intersection in support of hartal enforced by the National Committee to Protect Oil-Gas-Natural Resources and Power-Port.
When the procession reached in front of the National Museum police obstructed them, leading to a scuffle.
At one stage, police fired robber bullets, tear gas shells and water cannons to disperse them.
Pragatishil Chhatra Jote leaders claimed that five people ,including Lucky Akter, central leader of Dhaka University Chhatra Union and Umme Habiba Benazir, president of DU Chhatra Union, were injured in the police action.
The half-day hartal enforced by the National Committee to Protect Oil-Gas-Natural Resources and Power-Port demanding cancellation of Rampal power plant project near the Sundarbans is underway in the city.
Pro-shutdown demonstrations were also carried out in Shantinagar and Mohammadpur areas without any news of confrontation.
Traffic is fairly normal in other parts of the capital during the half-day general strike so far.
Five people were killed and two injured critically when a truck collided head-on with a microbus in Chunarughat upazila of Habiganj this morning.
Two of the deceased were identified as Microbus driver Al-Amin, 33, and Gautam, 30, reports our Moulvibazar correspondent quoting Officer-in-Charge of Chunarughat Police Station Nirmalendu Chakravarty.
The truck collided with the microbus on Dhaka-Sylhet highway in Ulukandi area around 7:15am, said Md Zakir Hossain, officer-in-charge of Shayestaganj Highway Police Station
Three passengers of the microbus died on the spot while four other passengers were injured critically, OC Zakiir Hossain said.
Later, two of the injured succumbed at a local hospital, he said.
The injured are now undergoing treatment at Habiganj Sadar Hospital.
