SJTU students have wide access to international opportunities: Dr. Sharmin Jahan

Dr. Sharmin Jahan is Post-doctoral fellow of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. She was convener of Bangladesh Student Union, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. She has shared her experience, educational and scholarship opportunity and many things. Nadim Majid has taken this interview by email.

Question: Tell us your academic study? (Primary school, High School, College, University, PhD, Post, Mention subject and topics if necessary)

Answer: I am working in Bangladesh Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (BCSIR) as Scientific Officer. But I am in deputation and serving as Post-doctoral Research fellow in Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

Question: Shanghai Jiao Tong University is prominent university of China. Tell us what opportunity and scholarship of Bangladeshi student.

 

Answer: Yea Shanghai Jiao Tong University is one of the oldest (founded in 1896) as well as a key university in China. QS World University Ranking of SJTU is 61.  The University has large numbers of outstanding figures including former China President Jiang Zemin. SJTU boasts 20 academic schools. SJTU has 60 undergraduate, 152 masters-degree, 93 Ph.D, 21 post-doctorate, 16 State key doctorate programs and 14 State key laboratories and National engineering centers. It has a good number of famous scientists and professors, including 22 academicians of the Academy of Sciences and Academy of Engineering, 35 “Changjiang Chair Professors (the highest academic award)”.  Great facilities and vibrant campus life, strong faculty and academic programs, leading research, and international perspective make SJTU a lucrative destination of the students who are dreaming for higher education. Moreover, SJTU offer different kind of scholarship like Chinese Government Special Scholarship for Postgraduate Program, Chinese Government Scholarship, Distinguished International Students Scholarship, Shanghai Government Foreign Student Scholarship (class A and Class B), SJTU Scholarship (for Distinguished Foreign Graduate Students), SJTU Reward Fund (for Distinguished Supervisors of Foreign Students), Liuyuan-Sheng Yudu Scholarship of SJTU, and SGS class C. Outstanding Self-Funded Foreign Students are also allowed to study in SJTU. Additionally, SJTU students have wide access to international opportunities – with the rapidly expanding portfolio of international exchanges, students and faculty of a world-class university have vast opportunities to meet and visit top universities all around the globe.

 

Question: When they started application process of graduate, post-graduate and higher studies?

Answer: Fall session of under-graduate, graduate, or post-graduate, the application period is normally started from December 1st to April 30th. However, Post-Doctorate applications are open all the year round.

Question: How much living cost for one student without scholarship?

Answer: It is relatively expensive to live in Shanghai the most dynamic city in East Asia without scholarship. One need approximate 2000-3000 RMB per month for living cost. Even the tuition fee also huge such as for Bachelor it is 24,800 to 29,000 RMB / year, whereas it is 28,900 to 104,000 RMB/ year and 45,500 to 100,000 RMB/year for Master and PhD respectively.

Question: You presided Bangladesh Student Union. What was your focus activity?

Answer: Actually I was the convener and country delegate of Bangladeshi student for last 3 years from 2014-2016. I took the initiative to organize the Bangladeshi students, so that we can present our history and culture to an international platform. Beside that during that period, we also focused on extra /co-curricular activities; conducted and motivated the students of Bangladesh willing to study in SJTU.

Question: Share us your organization’s activity in last year?

Answer: Whenever we got an opportunity to show our culture to the world, we never missed it. We try to ‘Bring the Community Together’ to the multicultural dais. Last year we have participated in several cultural festivals like World Culture Festival/ Mini Expo, Food Festival. Beside that we also celebrate our National days like International Mother Language day, Independence Day and Victory Day.

Question: Is your organization success?

Answer: It is a tough question. Success means a lot. I can say that we are more united than before. So you can consider it as our success. We live here like a family fa

r from our motherland more than 3000 km away and help each other when they face any difficulties. Most recently we officially starts the journey of Bangladeshi Student Union (BSU) with the aim of serving increasing number of Bangladeshi students in SJTU and encouraging the students to participate in different activities hold by the university for  enriching their SJTU experience. According to me these are our success.

Question: Share us something if you want to add.

Answer: Presently I am not the student of SJTU, , so I am a member of advisory committee of BSU not in the executive committee.  Nevertheless, still I participate actively in the activities organized by our association. Most recently we have made a great endeavor on the happy occasion of our Bengali New Year that was the best lay-out in Shanghai ever. The magnificent presentation of our culture in abroad is the yield of good and hard team work.

I always try to encourage myself as well as the people surrounding me to show the real Bangladesh. Because I belief that we have liability for our country, and we should not forget it. Finally I want to pay tribute to our Martyr, freedom fighters, women victims in 1971 for whom we  can stand up high on the world and proudly call the name “BANGLADESH”. Last but not least I also want to convey good wishes to all Bangladeshi people on behalf of BSU. We all love and miss Bangladesh.

 

(Dr. Sharmin Jahan has awarded PhD degree from Shanghai Jiao Tong University about Bioseparation & Analytical Biochemistry topics, She studied in Dhanmondi Govt. Girl’s High School, Rifles Public School and College and Dhaka University. She won some award and honor in her academic and professional life. Some recognitions are Outstanding Graduate of Shanghai Jiao Tong University 2016, Excellent International Student award 2015 (Shanghai Jiao Tong University), Excellent International Post Graduate Student award 2015 (Shanghai Jiao Tong University), Chinese Government Scholarship (PhD program) 2012, University of Dhaka Student Awards (Master’s program) 2005, University of Dhaka Student Awards (Honors) 2003. She is member of Royal Society of Chemistry, United Kingdom; American Chemical Society, USA; Scientist association, BCSIR, Bangladesh; Member, Graduate Biochemist Association (GBA), Bangladesh and Convener of Bangladesh Student Union, Shanghai Jiao Tong University (2014-2016))
